The Boy Without Eyebrows

He was ten the first time he came in, cap pulled low over his forehead.

His mom took the cap off — no hair, no eyebrows. A ten-year-old boy with a smooth, bare scalp. His sleeves were pulled down long; inside his elbows and behind his knees, eczema covered every fold, cracked skin weeping fluid, itching and stinging without pause.

His mom told me he had been on allergy medication since he was three. Seven years. Runny nose, itchy skin — the pills never stopped. She couldn't quite remember when the hair started falling out, only that it kept getting worse until his eyebrows went too. Years of medication, and still no hair, no relief.

We treated him with moxibustion. At first he was afraid of the heat, his whole body tense. After a few sessions he realized the warmth felt good, and he started watching the clock himself, telling us when time was almost up.

At his second visit, his mom said the weeping had stopped.

Session by session, the itching faded. The oozing areas scabbed over, flaked away, and new skin came in underneath. The allergy medication was tapered down, and half a year later, he was off it.

The hair came back last. Fine fuzz first, then the faintest hint of eyebrows. Today his hair has grown back — but not fully, and his eyebrows are still thin.

His mom asked me if it will ever fill in completely. I said I don't know. Seven years of medication, hair lost down to nothing — the body remembers more than we think. Coming this far is already remarkable.

Some illnesses resolve. Some marks remain. All a doctor can do is walk alongside the body, as far as it can go.

This is one child's story — every child is different. And coming off medication is something to work out with your doctor, never on your own.
